Real wood furniture is better for your wallet, better for your health, and better for our planet! (Can it get any better than that?)
The alternative materials for furniture, MDF, particleboard, "furniture board," and the like are inferior products and are potentially dangerous to your health. Furniture made with real wood furniture is the better choice in every possible way. Here are some reasons why:
Good for your wallet:
Real wood furniture will last for decades, so you won’t be replacing it unless you really want to. Even then, you can sell it, hand it down, or refinish it to update the look! Only real wood furniture can be stripped, repaired, restained, painted, and finished over and over and can withstand temperature and humidity changes—lasting decades longer than the artificial counterparts. One of our favorite customers always says "Quality is Economy," and she’s so right!
Good for your health:
MDF, particleboard and other artificial wood products are made from sawdust and chemical adhesives that are mixed and pressed into flat boards. These "boards" are then covered with a veneer made of a very thin sheet of wood or sometimes just plastic sheets (like contact paper) imprinted with a wood grain look. These chemical adhesives “off gas” toxic chemicals into the air of your home and can cause serious health issues. Real wood furniture does not contain any harmful chemicals.
Good for the planet:
What’s good for us is good for our planet too. By purchasing real wood furniture that can last for decades, we don’t contribute to our overwhelmed landfills and will reduce the demand for harmful chemicals found in artificial wood products.
We carry furniture in many different species. A few of the more common woods are alder, cherry, maple, oak, pine, and parawood.
Our furniture is sourced from large manufacturers as well as small local businesses. Most items are made in the USA, and all are sustainably sourced, responsibly harvested, or reclaimed.
Yes, Derbyshire’s offers white glove delivery to NJ and parts of NY, CT, and PA. Delivery charges are based on the distance from our store and the total cost of your order. We do not sneak "free" delivery expenses into the price of your furniture. You only pay for what you need. If you choose to pick up your purchase at no additional charge, we will happily help you load your vehicle.
Absolutely! That’s one of our specialties! Just bring us your measurements, and we’ll make it happen—and at dream-come-true prices!
You can give us a call at 973-694-2108 or stop in our showroom.
Almost always! Look for the notes that tell you "other colors available." Need something specific, just let us know.
If you find a piece you like but the size is not what you need, look for the notes that say "Can be modified" or just contact us and tell us what you need.
Everything we carry is fully assembled, but there are a few items that we can order as "ready-to-assemble" or in kit form. These may cost less than the assembled version and require you to assemble the piece yourself. Look for "Ready to Assemble option available" notes.
This means you have the option of ordering the item as a kit and of putting it together yourself. Only a few of the pieces we carry are available this way, but sometimes it comes in handy and you might save some money too.
Yes! Derbyshire’s has been in the same location since 1949. Come visit us at 1267 State Rt. 23 in Wayne.
If you see something on our showroom floor that you want, you can take it home with you right away or arrange for delivery. If you order an item, the lead times depend on the manufacturer’s schedule. Lead times could be anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months or more. Most items are built and finished to order.
To clean our wood furniture, you simply need some water on a damp soft cloth or sponge. We don’t recommend using anything more than that. If your furniture gets very dirty, a little white vinegar added to the water should be enough. Please don’t use polishes or waxes that will build up on the surface. Spills need to be wiped up immediately, although many of our dining tables are able to tolerate water spills for up to 24 hours. Do not place hot objects directly on surfaces, use trivets, hot plates, or coasters. Avoid rubber or plastic materials. Felt and cork are much more wood finish-friendly. Please don’t expose wood furniture to strong, direct sunlight, heat sources, or severe humidity as these could potentially cause fading or checking (splits, cracks) over time. With proper care of your real wood furniture, you’ll enjoy your purchase for many decades.
Real wood furniture does not always cost more than particleboard or MDF furniture. You can find plenty of higher priced, lower quality items at many stores, including brand-name chain stores. At Derbyshire’s we know that price is an important factor when shopping so we carry real wood furniture from over 18 carefully selected manufacturers to have quality options for every budget. As they say, the bitterness of poor quality lasts long after the sweetness of a low price is gone. Take a minute to read "What’s so special about REAL wood?"
